Side-Scrolling overworld design
Hey, I just wanted a heads up on if we we're sticking with the side scrolling brawler look for our overworld maps. I was thinking about it, and for this genre, it seems as if the player would basically just be moving continuously left or right to different backgrounds for long periods of time and it may not work well. I mean it works in brawlers because you fight the enemies on the screen. But in a Random battle system found in RPG's they would just look barren. Tell me what you think.

I think that a top-down view would look and feel the best.

That's how I feel as well. It would just get rid of the whole "hold right for 20 minutes to get to the end of the map" feeling. Top down allows you to explore fuller maps with that can be drawn to have heights and different aspects as opposed to continuous flat ground to walk across.

Another possibility is to be able to exit up and down the map to go to new areas. Not like this, obviously, but having north/south exits could be an alternative.
I don't care much, either way. Whatever you guys want to do.

I assumed it would be top-down, like every old RPG.
