Important Please Read
Hello everyone, this is going to be a particularly long post as there is a lot that needs to be said now while we are getting started. Please read this thoroughly and understand the reasoning behind the choices I will be making here, but feel free to question them as you please on the general discussion board.
First of all, let me describe why we are all here, or at least why I feel we are all here. There are a few reasons:
- We all have a deep passion for games, and a burning desire to create our own.
- We want to be a part of something that can potentially help others through the Extra Life charity.
- We want experience and referable material in the field of game design.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but these are the major ones. I want to make this perfectly clear though. None of these things will be accomplished unless we can actually get this project off the ground and completed. For this reason some decisions must be made, and because of me being the one to start this project I unfortunately must make them. The following may not sit well with you, but at a minimum put some thought into my reasons for these decisions and have some trust.
Not everyone here can be a core member of this team. As many of you have read via the reddit post, community driven work will never be completed. The industry veterans have made this clear. This is largely due to the fact that too many ideas are present and there would be a lack of focus on the goal. Without this focus we will never reach our intended goal. However, this is not to say there won't be a great deal of possible involvement from each and every one of you. I will describe this later in detail.
Please understand that this decision was made in favor of the project as a whole. I believe we can achieve something great here if everyone realizes just what we're trying to accomplish. This is by no means just something to do over the summer in your spare time because you have nothing better to do. This is an amazing reference on your resume. This is a chance to do something selfless. This is a chance to grow and learn. I say these things because they are true. But you must acknowledge this does not come without putting in an effort as a team and doing some work. Anyone participating in this project will be doing work. It could be drawing art, coding, making music, etc. but it is all considered work at some point or another. You will not be getting paid. You will be working for the reasons stated above, which will deter a lot of people from continuing with me on this project. These are the harsh realities of something of this scope.
In the end though, when we pull through which I truly believe we can, we will look back at this as a great experience. I have received replies in regards to my post the other night from people far more talented then myself, and more talented then I had expected anyone to be who would want to work on this. Which is why I will be encouraging each and every one of you to participate as much as you can in this project. Once we have a solid idea formed, and the ground level laid out there will be a HUGE list of assets that will need to be completed. This list will be posted in this forum and will be updated regularly as to whats been completed. This is your chance to shine. Anyone of you who feels up to the task of completing one of these assets is free to do so, and provided it meets the standards of the other assets, WILL be implemented into the final project. Every one who participates in this aspect WILL be credited within the game and I would be a personal reference to each of you upon completion.
Do note that all core members have not been chosen for the project either, and will most likely be assigned once production gets started. I want to see who is in this for real and has the same drive and motivation to achieve our goal as myself.
As a final note, I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this lengthy post. I know I am asking a lot, but this is only because I believe we can make a difference here. We can show not only that we can set out to accomplish a goal and complete it, but that anyone with enough motivation and willingness can be part of a team and create a great game. And I have no doubt in my mind that ours will be great.
